John Roskelley

Author and photographer, John Roskelley, is considered one of the world’s top Himalayan climbers and adventurers. He has spent 43 years climbing throughout the world, successfully reaching the summit of four 8,000-meter peaks, including the two highest, Everest and K2. John’s forte is climbing extreme rock and ice routes at high altitude and “set the bar” worldwide with first ascents of the East Face of Uli Biaho in Pakistan in 1979 and the winter ascent of the Northeast Face of Tawoche in Nepal in 1989, neither of which have been repeated. His most recent significant mountaineering achievement was reaching the summit of Mount Everest on May 21, 2003, at the age of 54 with his son, Jess, who at age 20 became the youngest American to reach the summit at that time.
John started climbing at the age of 16 with the Spokane Mountaineers. He attended Washington State University where he received a B.S. in Geology in 1971. John and his wife, Joyce, have been married for 36 years and they are the proud parents of three great kids, Dawn, Jess and Jordan.
John has written three adventure books and many articles for national magazines. His photography has appeared on the cover of National Geographic, numerous book and catalog covers, advertisements and posters. He worked for E. I. DuPont for 13 years and W. L. Gore and Associates for 12 years. In 1995, John ran for Spokane County Commissioner and filled that position for nine years. John was then appointed to the Eastern Washington Growth Management Hearings Board, a quasi-judicial position adjudicating environmental issues, by Washington State Governor Gary Locke.
John’s goals are to run the Pacific Crest Trail in segments from Canada to Mexico (he finished four segments of 40, 31, 18 and 30 miles last year before the snow fell, plus the Honolulu marathon), climb Gaurishankar’s unclimbed Northeast face (located in Tibet), and explore the wild areas of British Columbia’s Coast range.
