2010 ALE Annual Conference
Learning, Leading, Serving
Milwaukee, WI
June 20-23, 2010

Milwaukee

Keynote Speaker: Howard Behar

Howard Behar Howard Behar is the former president of Starbucks Coffee Company North America and Starbucks Coffee International. He joined Starbucks in 1989 when the company had just begun to venture outside the Northwest region. Initially serving as vice president of sales and operations, he grew the retail business from 28 stores to more than 400 stores by the time he was named president of Starbucks Coffee International in 1995. Under Behar’s leadership, Starbucks opened its first location in Tokyo in 1996. Following this historic opening, over the next three years he introduced the Starbucks brand across Asia and the United Kingdom. After a two-year hiatus, he returned to Starbucks as President of Starbucks North America until his retirement in January 2003. He was a director of the Company from 1996 to 2008.
Howard Behar began his career in the furniture business where he discovered it was the people he loved, not the furniture. His sense of the customers as people, his concern for their needs, and his experience of being a part of people’s dreams for their homes and their lives helped him make the next successive moves in his retail career.

A frequent speaker on the topics of organizational and personal leadership, Mr. Behar serves on several profit and nonprofit boards, including Anna’s Linens, Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, Washington State Budget and Policy Center, and University of Washington Foundation, and he is sponsoring a joint educational initiative with the University of Washington School of Social Work and the Business School. He also served as the Fritsky Leadership Chair 2008-2009 at the UW's Foster School of Business. He lives in Seattle with his wife, Lynn, and he loves boating and spending time with his children and young grandchildren.

Practice papers explore an innovative idea, teaching methodology, or challenge related to leadership education firmly rooted in leadership or pedagogical theory literature. The paper may also be a description of a leadership project, program, or practice.

Roundtables are small, informal discussions led by an expert in a topical area of leadership education. Roundtables allow attendees to discuss and share ideas with each other on a topic of shared interest, with the aid of a facilitator.

Posters are ideal for presenting speculative, late‐breaking results, or for giving an introduction to interesting, innovative work. Posters are intended to provide authors and participants with the ability to network with other like‐minded leadership educators and engage in discussions about the work.

Schedule of Events

Special Tuesday Evening Event

The Association of Leadership Educators is excited to partner with Cardinal Stritch University for our 20th Anniversary conference! Our conference schedule reflects three tracks and includes opportunities to network with the Cardinal Stritch doctoral program in Leadership for the Advancement of Learning and Service and with the International Network of Principals' Centers. Participants are welcome to explore all three tracks.

Highlights of this year's event include:

A guided leadership learning tour of Miller Brewery, a company known for being an industry leader and innovator;

Keynote speaker Howard Behar, former CEO of Starbucks;

A local culture program that promises to have us “schlemiel and schlemazeling” through some of Milwaukee’s scenic old neighborhoods (and the food won’t be too shabby either).

Don’t forget the posters, presentations, roundtable discussions and teach & share sessions where colleagues from around the country will share the latest information in leadership education research and practice.
